In 1984, Marc Garneau became the first Canadian to travel into space and the ninth edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) took place; both significant events, but at Get Right Physio, we’d argue that they don’t hold a candle to the first annual Seniors Month that also kicked off that year.
This year marks the 41st annual Seniors Month, an occasion celebrated across Ontario every June to acknowledge the contributions of older adults – specifically the positive impact they have on our communities and in the lives of others (be it through their work, volunteer efforts, or personal stories).
Personally, Seniors Month is a great calendar moment to remember the sacrifices my parents made for me, fleeing a war-torn country and genocide to give me new opportunities in Canada that I otherwise wouldn’t have had. Professionally, it’s a reminder that I wouldn’t be able to do what I do if it weren’t for the countless individuals who put their trust in our team to help them overcome the diverse challenges they may face.
With Canada expected to become a “super-aged” society by 2026, as the share of people aged 65 and older will exceed 21% of the total population, Seniors Month isn’t just a month to recognize the legacy, wisdom, and ongoing contributions of older adults in our communities; it’s also a call to action to support aging well by promoting health, connection, and independence.
That said, here are two key tips to remember this month – whether you’re a senior yourself, or you’re looking to ensure the seniors in your lives can age gracefully and with sound well-being.
The Value of Fall Prevention & Staying Steady
Keeping seniors’ balance sharp isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s life transformative. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians with 20-30% seniors experiencing one or more falls each year. Moreover, falls cause:
- 85% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations
- 95% of all hip fractures
- $2 billion per year in direct healthcare costs
Falls can result in chronic pain, reduced mobility, and loss of independence with 50% of all falls that cause hospitalization happening at home. While these numbers are daunting, the good news is that falls are preventable and action can be taken by all with targeted physiotherapy.
Balance and strength-focused programs can significantly lower fall risk. A 2024 network meta-analysis reviewing nearly 20,000 participants saw balance- and strength-focused exercise lead to an estimated 18–34% reduction in fall risk (even in home-based formats), showcasing that consistent exercise and movement make older adults feel steadier and more confident when moving.
What’s great is that prevention starts small. A 10-minute daily balance routine, a quick walking check each week, or guidance on steadying strategies at home can go a long way. Not only does it reduce the chance of a fall, but it also preserves independence and offers peace of mind. When we see balance improve and falls reduce, even before someone ever goes down, it’s a powerful sign of what preventive care really offers.
Connection Is True Medicine
Although movement is essential, aging well isn’t solely about mobility. It’s also about meaningful connections. And while being lonely isn’t exclusive to seniors, Statistics Canada does report that almost 20% of Canadian seniors report experiencing loneliness. But just like fall prevention can be aided by physiotherapy, so can this growing epidemic.
Each physiotherapy visit (whether in a clinic, in your home – wink wink, nudge, nudge – or online) is a chance to reconnect. These weekly check-ins aren’t just treatment; they’re human contact that supports mental health. Studies show that when older adults stay socially engaged, they tend to sleep better, feel less stressed, and think more clearly. In turn, that boosts physical recovery and keeps motivation high.
Yet, the truth is that you (whether you’re a senior, or trying to elevate the overall quality of life for a senior near and dear to you) don’t have to only rely on physiotherapy. Going on a daily walk with a loved one is a great start to combat loneliness. Physiotherapy can help even more, not just as rehabilitation but also as a bridge back to the community.
Because Every Chapter Deserves Care
As we mark 41 years of celebrating Seniors Month, let’s move beyond appreciation and toward action. Aging well isn’t just about reaching a certain number of birthdays — it’s about feeling steady on your feet, connected to your community, and supported in your goals, whatever they may be.
At Get Right Physio, we don’t just treat pain. We partner with people. Whether it’s through personalized balance training, a bit of laughter during a session, or simply being someone who shows up and listens, we’re here for the full picture. Because aging isn’t the end of the story. With the right care, it’s just the next chapter; and it can be a really good one.
