What's Limb Lengthening?

Limb lengthening surgery is performed to make the bones in certain parts of the arm or leg longer by flexing specific ligaments, tendons or muscles. People go through a limb-lengthening procedure for a variety of reasons, including to treat a benign bone tumour, cerebral palsy, and skeletal dysplasia.

How Do We Treat Limb Lengthening Through Physio?

Before you can start your recovery from your limb lengthening operation, you’ll need to book an appointment with one of our therapists so we can put you through an assessment to develop a plan to support your healing process.

Throughout the post-op physio assessment, your therapist will test your mobility and strength levels to understand your physical state and develop a plan to get you back to yourself.

The goal will be to bring your strength and mobility back to the way it was and broaden your range of motion so you don’t run into any future complications down the line.

Some of the common actions of our limb lengthening recovery plans include:

  • Joint Mobilisation
  • Gait Training
  • Soft Tissue Stretching
  • Strength Rehabilitation Exercises

The Benefits of Physiotherapy After a Limb Lengthening Surgery

Physical therapy following a limb lengthening surgery is crucial to restoring your body back to its former self.

It also comes with a variety of benefits, including:

It supports the extension of soft tissues, which enhances your muscle flexibility and decreases the amount of tension in the muscles.

It re-establishes mobility in your joints, reducing any pain you might be going through and improving your overall posture.

Over time, it will strengthen your muscles around the area where the procedure took place, giving you more stability in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

After you’ve finished your limb lengthening surgery, you’ll need a couple of days’ rest before booking an appointment with one of our therapists.

You should book your appointment within one week of having the surgery because you don’t want to take too long to start the recovery process, or else your joints could get stiff, and you might end up in pain, setting your recovery time back.

In most cases, physiotherapy can start once the fracture has been immobilized in a cast, and the types of exercises undertaken will change as the injury heals. You’ll likely receive advice from your doctor about when it’s safe to start physiotherapy sessions based on the nature and complexity of your fracture.

We offer physiotherapy services that deal with fractures in various settings, including houses and condos, hospitals, long-term care facilities and retirement homes.

Limb lengthening physiotherapy is very intensive. In the beginning, when you’re discharged from the hospital, it’s recommended you do physio a couple of times a week along with at-home post-surgery exercises that your therapist will give you to do when you’re alone.

Full recovery from a limb lengthening surgery depends on the amount of physio work you put in. On average, it takes someone between a few months and a year to heal completely.

We recommend that our patients spend 1-3 extra hours daily performing specific after-surgery exercises taught to them by our therapists on top of the physiotherapy appointments they’ve booked through us.

Weight-bearing exercises work to increase your bone density, which will lower the possibility of another fracture. However, you must follow your therapist’s guidelines and avoid lifting weights beyond what your therapist recommends, as doing so can setback your recovery process and heighten the risk of re-injury.
